Attitudes Towards Artificial Intelligence (ATRAI) aims to measure and explain how the Portuguese public views artificial intelligence (AI), using a face-to-face national survey of 1,300 respondents aged 15 and older. It applies a novel model that considers personal (egotropic), societal (sociotropic), and fairness-based beliefs as key drivers of AI acceptability. The survey will assess not only AI familiarity and perceived impacts but also attitudes toward procedural fairness and regulation. In addition to evaluating value orientations, political trust, ideology, and socio-demographics, the project includes an experiment to explore how people prioritize different attributes in AI use cases. The results will contribute to debates about digital inequality, regulation, and public trust in AI. Fieldwork will be completed in 2025, with findings feeding into academic outputs and public discussions on AI governance.
